The engagement performs 2 major functions : to pronounce the choice of a young couple to be married and to set the time required for the preparation of the marriage. The oldsters of both the person and the girl are introduced to one another and debate the preparations for the marriage, the way in which the marriage is to be held, where the newlyweds will live and what plans for the future they entertain.
In Russia a person, engaged to a girl, is regarded as a member of her folks. In Russian they act out the wedding, that is there's a special marriage script, where they try and observe all traditional practices. After the redemption they take the bride and her guests to the place where the wedding is officially registered. Russians don't spare money for the marriage : the tables are literally weighed down with savories and main courses, alcohol drinks and puddings.
